AI in transport planning: planning with an AI route planner

A new generation of planning software makes a plan in seconds, and AI thinks along with the planner. On this day you work with it yourself. You learn what AI can and cannot do, how to assess a proposal, and why the planner remains the one who decides.

What the AI does

  • AI answers the planner's questions. "Why doesn't V03 do the afternoon round?" "Why is this driver in the red on driving time?" "What does it cost if I move this trip to the diesel?" The AI looks into the plan and the calculation and explains it.
  • AI thinks along with alerts. "Driver off sick, what are my options?" The AI puts a few solutions side by side and has them calculated, with the cost, slack and rules for each option. The planner chooses.
  • AI answers management's questions. "Why has the cost per stop gone up?" "What does an extra e-truck deliver?" Answers in language a managing director understands.

The calculation method calculates, the AI thinks along, the planner decides.

The programme

Morning

  • How an AI route planner works: how a proposal is made, and how to assess it on time windows, battery and driving and rest times.
  • Damage prevention: planning pressure, slack and fatigue, and what electric driving changes.

Afternoon

  • The control room: in teams you plan a real day while the game leader brings in events: a broken charger, a driver calling in sick, a rush order. Two rounds, with scorecard and debrief.
  • Wrap-up: what do you take back to your own planning?
